A memorial service for the Hall and its members at the beginning of each season.
The name of the hall, located on the northwest corner of campus, was chosen in honor a former graduate assistant and football coach who was instrumental in developing the school’s sports programs.
The hall’s alumni include players like former Pittsburgh linebacker, current Hall of Famer, and former Penn State assistant head coach Matt Lombardi.
“We’re just thrilled that the Hall is here,” said University of Pennsylvania athletics director Scott Stricklin, whose school was named the inaugural recipient of the honor in 2014.
“This will not only honor the institution, but the entire Pittsburgh community.”
Strickin said the hall will be located in the university residence halls, but not in the main gymnasium.
He said the university will donate its $25,000 honorarium to the family of one of the former players.
The Hall of Heroes is an annual honor for former students and alumni, who are invited to present a personal tribute to the university or athletic program in honor.
It was created by the former President of the University, Richard Stallman, in 1975.
The first event was held in 1976 and the Hall has grown from one to include a variety of organizations, such as the National Guard and the National Rifle Association.
The current Hall was created in 2005 and the current recipient of this year’s honor, former Pittsburgh wide receiver and running back James Harrison, will also speak in the ceremony.
“I’m so grateful that this Hall is at Penn State,” Harrison said in a statement.
“They have been such an incredible resource and have been a great partner in my journey.
I am honored to have been selected for this award.”
In his remarks, Strickins said, “For me, this is more than a game; it’s a way of life.”
In addition to the current Hall, Strickerins is also honored to be named honorary president of the school, a position he holds until 2021.
Stricklins’ son, Jordan, is an assistant coach at the university.
