K-mart is to open a “world’s best” shop in the Colombus Memorial Halls in Melbourne, with a range of products to match the theme of the memorial.
The store, which will be called “The World” at the entrance to the Memorial Hall, will feature items from K-marts and other retailers including the likes of Nike, The Gap and Uniqlo.
The shop will be open on Mondays from October 17 to October 31.
K-mart has also signed up to work with a local group to create a permanent memorial in the Memorial Halls.
The company said the work will focus on “creating the best and most lasting memorial to the memory of those who have died and who were there for us in the most difficult time”.
It said the memorial would include items such as kites and flowers.
“We’re always looking for ways to honour our community and the memory that we’ve lost, and it is exciting to be a part of this project,” the company said.
Kmart has been one of the biggest employers in the Australian economy and employs more than 1,500 people.
Kiran Nair, chief executive of the Melbourne Council of Trade Unions, said the move to open the shop was “absolutely fantastic”.
“This is a huge milestone for K-Marts and the wider Colombian community, and we’re really proud to have been able to bring these items to the area,” he said.
“It is the kind of shop that is always an exciting time for the community and we hope to continue to be able to offer this type of product at the Memorial.”
