St George Illawarra ‘couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season’

St George illawarra’s record of only one win from their opening four games in 2017 will be questioned after a 5-1 loss to the Brisbane Broncos in the round nine blockbuster.

St George Illadarra had an opportunity to win the first two games of the season when they won by 20 points in Round 8 and 17, but missed the opportunity to extend their winning streak to seven games when they were defeated by the Broncos.

They are now eight points clear of third-placed Cronulla at the top of the ladder and have not won a game since the opening week of 2017.

In a game in which the Broncos dominated possession and kicked a goal in every quarter, it was St George’s inability to create opportunities on the scoreboard that led to their first defeat.

“We played well, we got out there and we were a bit careless with the ball and we didn’t have the composure to score and I think that’s a huge blow,” said Blues coach Matt Scott.

“It was just a lack of composure and it showed.”

The first half we gave away a few free kicks.

We got a bit sloppy with the first five minutes and then in the second half we were able to take the game into our own hands.

The loss to Brisbane will be difficult to erase for the Blues, who are currently 10th in the NRL ladder and six points clear at the bottom of the table.”

I thought our team gave it everything.”

But they have not lost at home since round 13 and will be looking to bounce back from the Broncos in their next home game on Saturday.

“I’m disappointed we lost to Brisbane but we got away from it.

We’ve got a big game against the Broncos and we’ve got to get it back,” Scott said.”

We’ve got some tough games coming up and we’ll get back out there on Saturday.”
