By Ryan M. McCarronThe White House announced that President Donald Trump will not attend the funeral of his wife, former First Lady Michelle, who was killed in an attack on a Charleston, South Carolina church in 2016.
A memorial service will take place in the Rose Garden of the White House, a spokeswoman said in a statement Friday.
The Rose Garden was a prime venue in the aftermath of the shooting.
Trump, the first president to use the Rose for such a purpose, will attend the memorial service on Monday with Vice President Mike Pence and other members of his administration.
The president was set to attend the Rose at the White, which was closed to the public, when a gunman opened fire at a church in Charleston, killing nine people.
The gunman, Dylann Roof, was sentenced to death in 2017.
In a statement issued Friday afternoon, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said, “The President will not be attending the funeral, which will take over the Rose garden for the first time in over a year.
It will be an incredibly moving event.”
