‘The best ever’ to win Commonwealth Games medal in football, rugby

AUSTRALIA’S finest rugby player will become the first man to win the Commonwealth Games Medal in football after being named on Australia’s final Olympic team.

The 26-year-old, from Perth, became the first Australian to win a medal in the sport after a thrilling quarter-final against Argentina at the Olympic Stadium in Glasgow.

The Olympic team has been named for the first time and it is the second time a member of the Commonwealth team has won the medal.

Australian rugby star Kieran Read was also named on the winning side.

“It’s been a really special moment for me and my family and my whole family,” he said.

Read, who has represented the country in two Olympics, said he was proud of the achievement.

“The best rugby player in the world and my team mates, it was a great team effort and I’m just so proud of that,” he told Sky Sports.

His compatriot, Scott Barrett, said the achievement was a dream come true.

“It is a dream to play rugby for Australia and to play in the Olympic Games in Rio,” he added.

Australia’s Olympic team was announced on Tuesday, a week after the team’s semi-final match against Argentina.

Barrett said the victory was “just fantastic”.

“We’ve had a good run here at the Olympics,” he explained.

We’ve played some really good rugby in the Olympics and it’s a good feeling to have won the gold medal and the silver medal.

“We’re really proud of our players, we’re really looking forward to the Olympics.”

Read is also hoping to become the oldest Australian to play for Australia in a Games, joining Matt Scott and Michael Hooper as the oldest players to have ever played in Rio.

He said he had already been thinking about the Olympics for the past two years.

“I’ve been thinking really about this for the last two years and obviously the Olympic dream was really big,” he laughed.

Scott Barrett was named as the man to lead Australia to a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics.

He said the decision to pick Read as the Olympic champion was his and the team was in “absolute awe” by the outcome.

“This is an honour and we’re very grateful,” he continued.

Ryan Grant was named the other member of Australia’s Olympic Team.

Grant, who plays for the Brisbane Broncos, said it was an “absolute honour” to be named on such a big honour.

“To be recognised as the best athlete in the country by the Australian team and to have the respect of the whole nation is really humbling,” he confirmed.

“There are a lot of good players that have been part of our squad and I’ve played a big part and I think that this has been a great tribute to all of the hard work that goes into the team and all the players.”

Hopefully we’ll keep improving and I look forward to getting the opportunity to represent Australia at Rio in some form.

“Read said the “ultimate goal” was to win Olympic gold in football and rugby.”

That’s definitely a big goal for me as well as rugby,” he admitted.

Rugby is a sport that has been dominated by English clubs in recent years.

Australia has won three gold medals in men’s and three golds in women’s rugby in Rio, and is hoping to be a gold medal contender in the men’s basketball final on Sunday.

Read said he and his team had the confidence in themselves and their preparations to go for gold in Rio and he was hoping to take home a silver medal as well.”

What a great feeling, to be able to get to Rio, to win something, that’s great,” he revealed.

Australian rugby legend Scott Barrett and the Olympic team are expected to make a return to the Olympic Village on Sunday to watch the final from the stands.
